MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard retrieved three more bodies from the capsized dredging vessel off the coast of Occidental Mindoro, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven. PCG divers retrieved one body from the accommodation area of sunken ship MV Hong Hai at 3:56 p.m. yesterday, Black Saturday, the agency’s Southern Tagalog District reported.

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Two Russian tourists who went missing during a scuba diving activity near Verde Island in Batangas City were found dead on Thursday afternoon, according to the Philippine Coast Guard. PCG-Batangas chief Capt. Airland Lapitan identified the fatalities as Ilya Perigudin, 29, and Maksim Melekhov, 39. Lapitan said Perigudin may had been attacked by sharks while Melekhov drowned.

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A Japanese fugitive linked to a group engaged in online scamming was arrested in San Pablo, Laguna on Monday night. The suspect, identified as Sasaki Takashi, 44, was collared in Barangay Soledad by a joint team of the police and agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI). The arrest was based on a warrant of deportation issued in March 2023, according to Col. Ricardo Dalmacia, Laguna police director.

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — What started as a happy get-together party for five resort employees ended in tragedy after one was killed and another wounded in a gun attack in Silang, Cavite on Saturday. According to a report by the Silang town police, resort employees Dionisio Cabcaban and Emelinda Bacordo reprimanded three of their coworkers for swimming in the pool, instead of cleaning it for guests.
