Every year and condition book is different, but as we head into a special five days of racing at Saratoga, it is worth noting that horses who made their last start at Aqueduct performed very poorly last year during Belmont Stakes week. Other than the last line, the above chart includes only those horses who had raced within 180 days of their Belmont Stakes week start. Of those, horses who made their last start at Aqueduct won just 8 percent of their races while posting a flat-bet loss of -67.9%.

Now that we know who is in the starting gate for Belmont Stakes 2025, there are only three key pieces of information missing before landing on a wager Saturday at Saratoga: where in the starting gate they will be after the post position draw at 5 p.m. EDT on Monday, how they train over the next five sleeps (or, more concerning, if they don't train) and what their actual prices will be.

As a racing fan it is always exciting when the Kentucky Derby winner returns to the races, as 2024 hero Mystik Dan does on Saturday in the Grade 3 Blame Stakes at Churchill Downs. The Grade 3 Royal North Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine attracted what appears to be a fairly competitive field on paper, but my wager involves thinking that favorite Earhart is above and beyond her competition. The LNJ Foxwoods homebred filly by Siyouni shipped to Canada late last year and won both starts as a 3-year-old by a combined 17 3/4 lengths.

I must admit I was disappointed when I saw Post Time is the 3-1 morning line favorite for the Grade 3 Blame Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs. I had slotted Post Time, who is multiple Grade 1-placed and was runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, as the second-most likely winner of the Blame. I thought I was on to something by picking him ahead of such horses as 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Grade 3 winners Hall of Fame and Banishing.
