A DOCUMENTARY about young anti-abortion activists was among the programmes recognised at the Sandford St Martin Awards on Tuesday evening. The awards, which were presented at a ceremony in Lambeth Palace, celebrate excellence in broadcasting about religion, ethics, and spirituality. The Trust said that this year’s accolades featured people “finding their voice, connection and identity even while surrounded by political, economic or social turbulence”.

A NEW booklet inviting churches, small groups, and individuals “to engage prayerfully with each phrase” of the Nicene Creed is now available. We Believe: Exploring the Nicene Creed, is published today by Church House Publishing, to mark the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, whose deliberations ultimately led to the adoption of the Nicene Creed. The Creed was expanded amended to its present form at the First Council of Constantinople, in 381.

THE Rt Revd Rob Saner-Haigh, Suffragan Bishop of Penrith, in the diocese of Carlisle, since 2022, is to be its next diocesan Bishop, Downing Street announced on Friday. Bishop Saner-Haigh, who is 52, has been the Acting Bishop of Carlisle since September 2023, after the see became vacant on the retirement of the Rt Revd James Newcome (News, 14 July 2023).

THE American Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, and has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV. He is the first pope from the United States. Pope Leo XIV, who is 69, was elected on the fourth ballot, on the second day of voting, by at least a two-thirds majority of the 133 cardinal electors gathered inside the Sistine Chapel for the conclave. More than 100 of the voting cardinals were appointed by Pope Francis during his 12-year papacy.
