Brenau closed Friday and Saturday due to winter storm

All Brenau University offices and campuses will be closed Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11, due to a winter storm expected across much of north Georgia and metro Atlanta. Forecasts from the National Weather Service include the potential for cold temperatures, winter precipitation, hazardous driving conditions and power outages. All in-person classes and on-campus events are canceled.
Alumna Kayanne Massey dies at age 84

Kayanne Shoffner Massey of Gainesville, Georgia, an alumna and longtime supporter of Brenau University, died Dec. 22 at age 84. The full obituary is available online. “We were saddened to learn of the passing of Kayanne Massey,” Brenau President David L. Barnett, Ph.D., said. “Kayanne kept the name of her alma mater raised up in the community and always spoke highly of Brenau and our students.
Brenau announces new endowed scholarship

The Melvin Douglas and Victoria Kay Ivester Foundation, Inc. has donated $100,000 to Brenau University to establish The David L. Barnett Scholarship. The scholarship honors Barnett, who became Brenau’s 11th president in February, and his 19-plus years of service at the university. Barnett said he was humbled to be honored by the Foundation and pleased the funds will support students.

OT students earn statewide awards

The Georgia Occupational Therapy Association has recognized two students in Brenau University’s School of Occupational Therapy in the Ivester College of Health Sciences. The association’s annual conference, held in October in Athens, Georgia, included students, faculty, and practitioners in occupational therapy. Brenau won both student awards presented at the conference.
Leitalift Foundation establishes scholarship for Brenau women

The Leitalift Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in the Atlanta metro area, has established an endowed scholarship at Brenau University for female undergraduate students. “On behalf of the university, I appreciate this extraordinary gift from the Leitalift Foundation to create a scholarship that will provide ongoing financial assistance for undergraduate women at Brenau,” Brenau President David L. Barnett, Ph.D., said.
Eight students awarded scholarships funded by Ivesters

For the 2024-25 academic year, eight students at Brenau University have been awarded scholarships funded by Kay and Douglas Ivester and the Melvin Douglas and Victoria Kay Ivester Foundation Inc. The couple are Hall County natives and Doug Ivester has served as a Brenau trustee for many years. The Ivesters are heavily involved in the success of Ivester College of Health Sciences and the Gainesville Renaissance, which houses the Lynn J.
Trustees dedicate Skleder Hall, official portrait to honor late president

Brenau University and the Board of Trustees were joined by students, faculty, staff and guests on Friday, Nov. 8, to dedicate an official portrait and the renamed Skleder Hall to honor the late Dr. Anne A. Skleder, who died in October 2023. “Today we name this great building and dormitory in her honor and memory because of what the students meant to her,” Trustee Anna Jacobs, WC ’86, said.
Exhibit featured on WABE’s City Lights with Lois Reitzes

Brenau University’s Director of Galleries Lybi Cucurullo and Atlanta artist Alexi Torres were featured on the Oct. 31 episode of City Lights with Lois Reitzes. The show airs on WABE 90.1 FM, Atlanta’s National Public Radio affiliate. Reitzes covers Atlanta culture, including art, food, entertainment and more. City Lights began in 2015, but Reitzes has been hosting on WABE since 1979. Torres’ solo exhibition Unbrainwashablecontinues at Brenau through Nov.
