Morning, friends! ☀️ You may remember a few months ago, when I put out a call to share your stories about how you became a runner and where running has taken you. I’m blown away by the responses I’ve received, as we’ve heard so many fantastic, moving and insightful stories from readers like Rosalie Chan, Erinn Connor, Ken Morrison, Colleen McBride, Chanse Carlson, Debby Jones, and Ruth Franklin.

Here’s a law of physics. That thing you’ve been putting off? The one that gets transferred from to do list to do list? No, wait, not that one, not the big abstract one, the one that reads, in all caps, the specific words may be different but what it means is CHANGE MY LIFE — sorry, the law of physics that applies to that one will be revealed in a subsequent newsletter. Promise. I mean the other one, the smaller, more concrete one. It’s like, making a phone call, maybe?

Have you ever felt practically useless? (Raises hand.) I don’t mean practically as in all-but-entirely; I mean practically as in related-to-the-quote-unquote real world. I mean have you ever felt unequal to the task of safely navigating, much less repairing or improving, your built environment. I mean do you believe motors are powered by witchcraft, or might as well be.

A friend once asked me whether she had a drinking problem. “I have to have three glasses of wine a day!” she said. I laughed. Only three? “But I have to have them.” I told her I drank 10 glasses of wine a day, and then we both laughed. We were bloggers at the time, living in New York, in our 20s. Drinks after work were standard, nothing to think twice about. But her comment lodged in my mind. Is it the needing and not the number? The itch? Of course you have to have them, I thought at the time. It’s wine.
