The gig economy is attractive to workers seeking greater flexibility in their professional lives. In practice, however, algorithmic management often means greater control for companies and less protection for workers, who are pushed to work at times of peak demand. As the artificial intelligence revolution accelerates, the outcome of gig workers’ struggle for their rights will affect us all. “The gig economy is zero rights and zero protection,” says Shaf Hussain, a food delivery courier in London.
