It’s in west London at a time when the capital’s press regards east London as the centre of dining gravity. It does not have an easily identifiable clientele. And it is mercifully unbothered about chasing Instagram likes. Yet despite this elusiveness, the restaurant is sure of itself. There is no hysteria, no clamour; it just does what it has always done.

At the end of August, the most successful exhibition in the history of Studio Voltaire closed. The show was ‘Beryl Cook/Tom of Finland’. There’s something very appropriate about Studio Voltaire, the small set of studios and gallery built around a converted chapel in Clapham in south London, putting on such a show.

In 1977, the contents of Mentmore Towers, better known simply as Mentmore, was sold in what many dubbed ‘the sale of the century’. Though it’s far from the only auction to have been given this name, the contents of the Earl of Roseberry’s house were undeniably impressive. The auction was held inside the house itself, as was the fashion for collection sales in England at the time. This meant that arriving at the auction offered more scope for making an entrance than sale rooms do today.

At the height of summer, art fairs are probably the last thing on anyone’s mind. It is one of the great mercies of the season. But this sense of relief raises a question about art fairs. If everyone is happier being on an island in the Mediterranean with an occasional trip to an art foundation then why does anyone attend them? Art fairs are a slightly odd phenomenon.
