Books of condolence have opened at key Garda stations in Carlow and Kilkenny for those that wish to pay their respects to Garda Kevin Flatley. The 49-year-old, father of two was killed when he was hit by a motorbike while carrying out speed checks on the R132 near Lainstown in Dublin on Sunday. A number of stations in each county are hosting books of condolence – including Kilkenny city, Thomastown while he’s being remembered too in Carlow where members of his family had lived.

The Chief Executive of the Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board has retired after 40 years of service. Eileen Curtis began her journey in Waterford before joining County Kilkenny VEC in 1987 as an Adult Education Officer. She played a key role in the amalgamation of that organisation with its Carlow counterpart and took the helm in 2019.

Gardaí in Kilkenny are investigating an incident of criminal damage at Rothe House. Solar lights on the historic city property were damaged sometime between last Thursday and Friday (8th and 9th May). Anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area or who may have camera footage is asked to contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 777 5000.

The Vintners Federation of Ireland’s calling on the Government to act to prevent publicans having to close due to escalating costs of doing business. Members are meeting in Limerick today for their annual general conference where they’re seeking a 40% rebate on the excise charged to draught products sold in pubs as well as a level playing ground when it comes to any reduction in VAT.

Tributes are being paid to trailblazing jockey Rachael Blackmore who announced her retirement last evening after a 16 year career. The Tipperary native who lives in Carlow made history as the first female in her sport to win both the Grand National, in 2021 on Minella Times, and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2022 on A Plus Tard. She retires at the age of 35 with 18 Cheltenham Festival wins, leaving behind a legacy that changed the face of racing.
