To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Director of AANAPISI Dr. Aida Cuenza-Uvas and her admin welcomed all to the Multicultural Center to witness the six finalists of the first annual storytelling contest, as well as ARISE’s new art installation, “I am AANHPI.”The contest was titled, “My Words, My Power.” Storytellers prepared 5 minute speeches to anecdotally answer the prompt, “How did your cultural identity develop over time?” There were many present themes of emigration,...

“How often do you all practice self-care?” -Carol ChungAs May’s Student Equity Speaker, Ms. Carol Kim Chung has her masters in social work and discussed how to cultivate tools of wellness daily. Practicing self care is meant to create an inclusive conversation, regulate the peace within and strengthen the personal connection between mind, body and soul. For Carol, she loves to take short walks between meetings to reset.

It’s May 1st. Miracle Mile. The Spring 2024 Career Fair had dozens of employers within different fields set up info booths. Local school districts, Police departments, Healthcare professions and many more employers are brought right to campus. Come with a resume, find a few booths that interest you and start asking questions. It’s possible for attendees to walk out of this event with a second interview. Or at the least, new info on what a job may entail.

The Student Equity Center invites a speaker each month to talk to Mt. SAC students. These are the experiences of April’s Student Equity Speaker, Shirley Torres, Chief Program Officer for Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation program and therapeutic community in the country. She grew up in South Los Angeles surrounded by gangs and violence. She didn’t know anyone who chose what they did for a living, let alone who went to college.
