TOKYO/FRANKFURT, Germany -- Hitachi has collaborated with Nvidia to develop an AI-based system that inspects the safety of railway infrastructure, the Japanese industrial group said Tuesday, as it looks to make maintenance work more efficient with real-time monitoring. The new system -- dubbed Hyper Mobility Asset Expert (HMAX) -- was unveiled at InnoTrans, the world's largest railway technology exhibition, which opened in Berlin on Tuesday.

FRANKFURT -- Mercedes-Benz Group has withdrawn from its Chinese electric vehicle joint venture with BYD, the German automaker said Tuesday, selling the remaining 10% interest it had held after unloading the bulk of its stake in 2021. The venture, which develops and manufactures luxury EVs under the Denza brand, is now wholly owned by BYD. Mercedes said its technology has not been incorporated into current Denza models.

FRANKFURT, Germany -- BMW will cooperate with Toyota Motor to develop fuel cell vehicles under plans announced Thursday, aiming to begin mass production in 2028 as a new option amid slowing global sales of electric vehicles. "This is a milestone in automotive history: the first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium manufacturer," said Oliver Zipse, chairman of BMW's management board, in the companies' news releases.

FRANKFURT/NAGOYA -- Toyota Motor and BMW will upgrade their partnership in fuel cell vehicles as the two auto giants see them as prospective next-generation eco-friendly models amid slowing growth in demand for electric vehicles, Nikkei has learned. BMW aims to begin mass production of a fuel cell vehicle model in a few years. The Japanese and German companies are set to sign a memorandum of understanding for the partnership next week and announce it during BMW's media roundtable on Sept. 5.

FRANKFURT/GUANGZHOU -- Airfare for international flights to and from Asia is falling as Chinese airlines aggressively expand cross-border service amid softening post-pandemic travel demand. "Compared to last year's summer break, the prices of tour packages have gone down considerably," said a representative of a travel agency in the Chinese city of Shenzhen. "Family group tours have been especially popular."
