    FRANKFURT/NAGOYA -- Toyota Motor and BMW will upgrade their partnership in fuel cell vehicles as the two auto giants see them as prospective next-generation eco-friendly models amid slowing growth in demand for electric vehicles, Nikkei has learned. BMW aims to begin mass production of a fuel cell vehicle model in a few years. The Japanese and German companies are set to sign a memorandum of understanding for the partnership next week and announce it during BMW's media roundtable on Sept. 5.

    NAGOYA, Japan -- Toyota Motor will build a battery plant for electric vehicles in Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, Nikkei has learned. The company aims to position Kyushu, which is home to many auto and semiconductor plants, as a central part of its EV supply chain and an export base to Asia. While Chinese manufacturers are turning heads with cheaper EVs in Asia, Toyota hopes to make its luxury Lexus brand a pillar of its EV strategy.

    NAGOYA -- The newest scandal in Japan's auto industry has shed light on Toyota Motor's overconfidence in internal testing, underscoring a disregard for following government standards. Toyota, Mazda Motor, Honda Motor, Suzuki Motor and motorcycle maker Yamaha Motor have admitted to irregularities in testing, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said Monday. Deliveries of six models have been halted.

    TOKYO -- The latest testing scandal surrounding Japanese automakers has ensnared previously untouched players including Toyota Motor, further undermining the reputation for quality that has supported a pillar of the nation's manufacturing sector. Toyota, Mazda Motor and motorcycle maker Yamaha Motor have suspended shipments of six models over safety testing irregularities in their applications for the model certification that the Japanese government requires for mass production.
