Concern some top eventers at Badminton were too thin or under-muscled may show how common overweight horses are, it has been proposed, as people are reminded that fitness can have many faces. In the wake of this year’s CCI5* at Mars Badminton Horse Trials (8–11 May), numerous people posted pictures of horses on social media claiming they were underweight or had atrophied muscles.

Harry Meade is the new eventing world number one rider, the first time he has topped the rankings. He leads an all-British podium; Tom McEwen stays in second place and Ros Canter is third. “It’s a great honour to be world number one, and a real milestone,” said Harry, who finished third and fourth at Defender Kentucky in April, and fourth and sixth at Badminton in May. “It’s particularly rewarding for the wider team behind me – they are so invested, and their hard work and support has led to this.

A tiny foal who was tied to a post and “discarded like rubbish for someone else to deal with” may not have been dead when he was dumped. The RSPCA is appealing for information after the body of the skewbald colt was found in a ditch near the entrance of a nature reserve in Bowers Gifford, Basildon, Essex on 4 or 5 May. “The young foal had been tied to a sign post by some blue rope, which was also attached to the foal’s legs,” a spokesperson for the RSPCA said.

A pregnant mare who was one of a lorryload intercepted en route to Europe – probably for slaughter – has defied the odds to give birth to a healthy “miracle” foal. Amy was one of the “trafficked 20”, a group of horses crammed into an unsuitable lorry and intercepted in Dover at the end of last year. Many of the horses were too sick to travel, and five had to be put down.
