The conservative Liberal Party, which had been in power for nine years in coalition with the smaller National party, suffered the worst result in its history.

    China has lifted an export ban on beef from five major Australian meatworks, ahead of a visit by its Premier Li Qiang to Canberra in June. Beef was one of several industries which China hit with trade bans and tariffs in 2020, affecting $20 billion of Australian exports. Almost all of those sanctions have now been lifted.

    Israeli tanks have advanced to the heart of the southern Gazan city of Rafah, as outrage mounts over a strike that killed at least 45 people on Sunday. Gaza's health ministry says another 21 people were killed in a tent camp west of Rafah on Tuesday, though Israel denies responsibility. The US says it will continue to arm Israel, claiming that it has not launched a major ground offensive in the city.

    The French President Emmanuel Macron has held talks with political leaders in New Caledonia, more than a week after deadly protests erupted in the French territory. Indigenous independence supporters started rioting after the French government changed voting rules, killing six people. More than a hundred Australians are still stranded in New Caledonia, with France refusing to give clearance for military evacuation flights.

    Another 100 Australians are being flown out of New Caledonia to Brisbane as evacuation efforts continue following riots in the French Pacific territory. About 80 Australians have already returned on repatriation flights, but many more remain stranded. The French President Emmanuel Macron is travelling to New Caledonia to try to broker talks to end the violence.
