Sports On Friday night in Hamilton, New York, No. 6 women’s hockey accomplished what last year’s team could not, knocking off the Raiders for the first time in nearly two years. The next day in Ithaca, the Red failed to pick up the weekend sweep, giving up three goals in the final period and snapping a twelve-game unbeaten streak.

Sports For roughly a day, there was a new No. 1 in the ECAC. On Friday night, then-No. 7 women’s hockey stormed into Potsdam, New York, shut out one of the nation’s top offenses and wrestled control of the top seed in the ECAC from Colgate.

Sports After graduating the best player in college hockey, it might have been expected for women’s hockey to take a step back from last year’s performance. On the back of Izzy Daniel ’24, the 2023-2024 Patty Kazmaier recipient and 18th overall pick in the PWHL Draft, last year’s team reached a NCAA regional final, allowing the seventh fewest and scoring the seventh most goals in the nation.

Sports Down two goals early in the second period, No. 12 men’s hockey fought back to send the game to overtime and eventually defeat nearby rival Colgate, 3-2. Freshman forward Charlie Major, an upstate New York native who grew up attending games at Lynah Rink, was the hero. He scored the game-winner in front of his family, childhood friends and a roaring, sold-out Lynah Rink.

With 10 minutes to go in the third period trailing 3-1, then-No. 8 women’s hockey seemed destined for a tough road loss against then-No. 7 Quinnipiac. Instead, Cornell rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 tie, the team’s first multi-goal third-period comeback since at least before the pandemic. The next day in New Jersey, Cornell found itself down three goals in the second period against (RV) Princeton.

Looking to salute its seniors, football took Schoellkopf Field for the final time in 2024 searching for a seemingly improbable win against Dartmouth. The Big Green, undefeated on the road and boasting a 7-1 overall record, entered as clear favorites. In a second half riddled with interceptions and possession changes, Cornell ultimately prevailed. A late offensive push — including 20 fourth-quarter points –– put Cornell on top, 39-22, giving its seniors one final salute on Schoellkopf Field.

After holding off No. 10 women’s hockey for 15 minutes, Harvard’s defense crumbled and Cornell routed the Crimson at a rocking Lynah Rink for a second straight year, this time by a score of 5-1. The win over Harvard (2-6-0, 1-6-0 ECAC) pushes Cornell’s winning streak in Ivy League play to eight, stretching back to last season. “It was electric,” said junior forward Mckenna Van Gelder. “The house was pretty packed out there. We had the full pep band which is always a blast when they’re here.

After women’s hockey’s mediocre start to ECAC play at home, sophomore goaltender Annelies Bergmann returned to All-Ivy form and led the Red to an impressive road sweep. Dating back to the weekend before, Bergmann went 206 minutes without allowing a goal en route to 2-0 and 2-1 Red victories over Yale (RV) and No. 15 Brown respectively. While No. 10 Cornell (4-3-1, 3-1-0 ECAC) hit the road on the heels of a 7-0 thrashing of RPI on Nov.
