Rape is one of the most terrible things that can happen to a person. It leaves deep scars, not only on the victim but also on families and communities. Unfortunately, it happens all over the world, including in Samoa. But it should never happen, not here, not anywhere. Samoa is a nation built on values of respect, family, and love, and these values must stand strong against any form of violence, including rape. Rape is when someone forces another person to have sex without their consent.

‘Leave your suits at home.’ That’s the travel advisory message from Samoa’s prime minister ahead of her tiny Pacific nation hosting one of the world’s most prestigious meetings of world leaders next month, in what will mark a series of firsts. It will be the first Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting to be attended by King Charles since ascending the throne last year and the first ever to be held in the Pacific.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme(SPREP) and Monash University have strengthened their cooperation for the protection of the Pacific environment, by the signing of a five-year partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The signing was held on 9 September 2024, at the Pacific Climate Change Centre on the margins of the Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological (CBD COP16).

The head of the Commonwealth and Britain’s monarch King Charles III will arrive in Samoa on October 25, towards the end of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The police have also confirmed the areas from Mulinuu where the School of Maritime is up to Matautu where Taumeasina is has been dubbed the CHOGM Peninsula. This was confirmed by Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo at a press conference held at the TATTE Building on Monday.

Forgiveness is a powerful process that allows people to let go of anger, pain, and resentment, whether directed toward others or themselves. When someone forgives, they make a conscious choice to release negative emotions associated with past hurts. Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing wrongdoing, but rather, it is about freeing oneself from the emotional burden that these feelings bring. Self-forgiveness works similarly.

Pauli Wong Chiu Isara is an artist from Vailele Uta whose work is featured in Samoa’s First 10 Book Series for children launching on the 28th of September. This initiative is called Tatou Faitau or Let’s Read by Asia Foundation in partnership with Samoa Early Learning Foundation, a local charitable organisation dedicated to enhancing children's learning, especially in literacy and reading.
