Located in the heart of Uptown Sedona on Oak Creek lies a resort where luxury and relaxation are paramount. The tranquil place is Amara Resort and Spa, and staying here has far exceeded my expectations. While I have stayed in a few places around Sedona since moving to Arizona in 2009, I never had quite as memorable an experience as I did here. Kalu and the Electric Joint hail from Austin, Texas, but their sound spans continents. Spearheaded by frontman Kalu James, the band is composed of a rotating cast of musicians including guitarist JT Holt, guitarist and keyboardist Pearl Z, drummer Greg Clifford, and bassist Yohan Valles. All together, these musicians craft a sound that’s both psychedelic and grounded. Over the years, this five-piece band has earned “hometown hero” status, playing shows all around the central Texas region.

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Katie Pruitt doesn’t shy away from vulnerability. With every crooning vocal line and emotional lyric, she ropes the listener in. Her newest record, Mantras, came out in April 2024 and examines themes of self-compassion and healing. With songs like “Blood Related,” which reflects on rocky relationships with people across party lines, and “All My Friends,” which alludes to her changing community, Mantras feels particularly relevant for this moment in time.

Austin City Limits Festival weekend two took place October 4th through 6th and was spearheaded by a lineup of today’s biggest pop acts. Music boomed from every direction as festivalgoers shuffled from stage to stage in the sweltering heat. Despite the packed crowds, the energy at the Austin City Limits Music Festival felt shimmering and effervescent. The second weekend’s lineup spanned genres, and the packed schedule caused people to make some tough choices.
