Fossil generation decreased by 22% (-247 TWh) over the same time period, with sharp falls in both coal and gas generation. Coal generation fell by a quarter (-25%, -115 TWh) from 2019 to 2023. This was despite a temporary uptick in 2021 amidst the energy crisis, and the temporary postponement of some coal power plant closures that did not impact the overall trend of declining generation.

Europe must revise outdated grid plans to prepare for surging deployment of wind and solar power. Europe’s turbocharged electricity transition is in full swing. Wind and solar capacity additions continue to break records. The outlook for solar remains positive and Wind Europe recently forecasted that rising annual deployment will take the European Union close to its REPowerEU ambitions for wind. This is good news for Europe, particularly amid geopolitical tensions and high inflation.

Comparing living and working conditions: Germany out-performs the United States This paper compares living and working conditions in the US and Germany for the year 2022 with a focus on economic, social and environmental standards. Emphasis is also placed on income and wealth inequality. Twelve dimensions of comparison are used, split into 15 themes, examined with 80 indicators. Germany comes out ahead on 10 of the themes.

The editorial deadline was set at 31 December 2023. New plans or updates published after this date could not be taken into account. Where no English version was available, these were downloaded in their original language and translated to English using Google Translate.
