Born in New York City to parents who were both heavy drug users, Jamal was essentially left in the hospital as an infant when his mother left to battle her addiction. Without a parent to name him, the nurse chose the name Jamal after the actor Malcom-Jamal Warner from The Cosby Show, which was very popular then.
