    Spanish researchers are hoping science will become more entrenched in government policy, following the launch of a scientific advisory office designed to create new links between scientists and politicians. The National Office for Scientific Advice (ONAC) will establish a network of science advisers across government departments, according to plans outlined at a 20 June kickoff event.

    The chronic ills plaguing French biomedical science require a complete overhaul of the country’s system for managing and funding such research, according to a government-commissioned report released last month. At the top of the list of recommendations is a proposal to create a national agency to oversee all biomedical research, similar to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). But although many scientists welcome the suggestions, some are skeptical that they will ever be fully instituted.
