Aviation is one of the fasted-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. During the coronavirus pandemic, people could not fly and there was a temporary reduction in the gas emissions, which rebounded quickly after Covid to pre-pandemic level. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) forecasted that by 2025 international aviation emissions could triple compared to 2015.

The MV Ruby has recently docked at the port in Great Yarmouth, and is awaiting repairs to its hull and propeller, which were damaged last month in a storm. The 12 year-old, bulk cargo carrier is like any other vessel of its kind, save for one fact: It is currently carrying 20,000 tons of potentially explosive ammonia nitrate.

The Supreme Court held that Article III, rule 6 of the Hague-Visby Rules, applied to a claim for misdelivery, which occurred after discharge of the cargo had been completed. Therefore, the claim against the carrier for misdelivery was time-barred. The issue to be determined in this case was whether the one-year time limit in the Hague-Visby Rules to bring a claim applied to a claim for misdelivery of cargo after discharge of the cargo from the vessel.

Recent news reports have announced that Maersk has joined Lloyds Register and Core Power to review the safety and regulatory considerations, for a potential next-generation nuclear-propelled feeder containership. Potentially this would add a further alternative fuel source to the current list:-LNG and bio-LNGLPGAmmoniumMethanolWindBiofuelsHydrogenAmmoniaBatteries. At the moment it is estimated that about 5.5% of the global fleet is using an alternative power source to light fuel oil.
