The U.S. Department of Agriculture has indefinitely suspended imports of live cattle, horses, and bison from Mexico due to the threat posed by the screw-worm, a dangerous flesh-eating parasite. The USDA announced the suspension after the parasite was detected on remote Mexican farms. While commonly referred to as a screw-worm, the parasite is actually a fly. Its maggots feed on animals by burrowing into wounds or openings, a process that gives the pest its name.
