Camping with a big family means buying lots of camping gear. Our limited budget means we want to get the most value for our money when it comes to the gear we buy. The REI line of camping gear for kids hits that sweet spot for us. Last Christmas, we bought 3 REI Kindercone 25 sleeping bags for our kids. Multiple camping trips later, we’ve given those sleeping bags some good use. Overall verdict? The kids love their sleeping bags, and I do, too.

Edenland Park, a themed adventure park near Bucharest, Romania, offers a wide range of activities for kids (and adults) of all ages. The most notable feature of Edenland is that it is located within a forest. Perhaps the largest part of its charm is that every attraction and activity takes place under the shade of mature, branching trees. Entering Edenland, you feel transported to another, almost fairytale, world.

When I got home from visiting Moldova, I told everyone that my highlight of the trip was visiting Transnistria – a country that doesn’t exist. Maybe I like the shock value. Wikipedia defines this anomaly as a breakaway state internationally recognized as part of Moldova. Whatever it is – and I certainly don’t understand the politics behind it – a visit there does make for a great story.

The most iconic image of Moldova is the breathtaking church perched atop the edge of a steep ridge overlooking a river directly below. Although tourism in general is underwhelming in this small Eastern European country, Orheiul Vechi (translated as Old Orhei) is one destination you won’t want to miss. If you’re coming from Chisinau, getting to Orheiul Vechi is easy. About an hour’s drive on good roads will take you from the capital city to the country’s best-known tourist destination.

Southern Moldova’s leading city of Cahul is charming and surprisingly pretty. The surrounding area also offers a fascinating glimpse of the traditional life still lived by most of the population. The traditional lifestyle centers around small-level agriculture and close-knit communities. While the region is rather undeveloped in economic terms, and tourism is very underdeveloped, a little bit of digging can reveal plenty to explore.
