Thousands of patients were given blood contaminated with HIV, hepatitis C, and other infections over a 21-year period, in what has been termed by Lord Winston “the worst treatment disaster in NHS history”, according to the results of the Infected Bloody Inquiry. The Inquiry's final report, published on May 20, 2024, has confirmed that across the UK, more than 3000 deaths have resulted from infected blood and blood products that were given to patients between 1970 and 1991.
