Work kicks off this week on a new park in the central Canadian city of Calgary that will offer flat, color-coded paths that loop through patches of native wild plants and stretches of lawn. An open amphitheater and playground will give community members and children places to relax and play. Benches will offer plenty of places to sit, shaded by trees and pavilions of various sizes and shapes. Like other public parks, the Martin Family Legacy Garden is intended to serve all city residents.

On an early spring day, Brandon Brownell greeted shoppers as they came into Smart Art and Craft Supplies in northeast Nashville. The shop is a crafter’s paradise. Tables in the front are loaded with weaving supplies, like cones of caramel and black yarn. Shelves in the back overflow with bolts of patterned fabric. Artists can pick up paints, pencils and paper of all different weights.

Susan Manners and her partner were looking to move to Vermont to be closer to their kids when they stumbled upon a chance to buy a townhouse in a new development in the northwestern city of South Burlington. The view — a vista of the Green Mountain range — was a huge selling point, Manners recalls.
