HELLO FEBRUARY. Goodness, I am very glad to see January in the rearview mirror. After a challenging start to the year, I turned a corner over the weekend with a re-do of my birthday (which fell on the worst day of the fires here in Los Angeles). I almost scrapped any and all celebrations, but with Matt’s urging and planning we threw together a last-minute drinks — and had the best time. Balloons and bubbly, plus a very fun new bodysuit, made for a heck of a party.

When my family moved to Los Angeles nearly four years ago, one of the things that surprised me most was how strong the sense of community is here. The city itself is massive and sprawling, known for its glitzy, star-studded events. But each neighborhood is like its own a small town. Most of the friends we have made live nearby; we run into them at the grocery store or coffee shop.

I need to start by saying: We are so lucky. Beyond lucky. Our home is fine. As fires burned to the east, north, and west of us last week, we stayed put. When one broke out to the south, forming what was called the “ring of fires,” we made the choice to leave. We have a place to stay, thanks to some dear friends. The devastation we are all seeing out of Los Angeles is unfathomable.
