I remember watching federal agents storming the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. For some inexplicable reason, my fifth-grade teacher wheeled a television into our classroom in Banquete, 300 miles away, that afternoon on April 19, 1993, so we could watch together as tanks rolled into the buildings, the subsequent fire raged, and the reporters lamented the men, women, and children who burned to death. In the following years the horrors of that day have largely subsided from American memory.
