A first-of-its-kind residence for Indigenous women is $1 million richer thanks to a grant from TD Bank. The money will help fund a second-stage housing program that opened its doors last fall. Miyoskamin, a Cree word, means “ground-breaking” in English — which is exactly what this special housing project is. The unique second-stage residence in Montreal’s Little Burgundy is a fresh start for Indigenous women and their children.

A Montreal bar owner is scratching his head over a decision to block the side walk in front of his bar on St Denis street, only to put a temporary beer tent right in front. The street, closed since Friday, hosted a free event for Nuit Blanche bringing thousands of people to the area. “They did it last year which went very well, everyone had a good time,” said Turbo Haüs bar owner Sergio Da Silva. “But this year they decided that they were going to get a liqour license and a beer tent,” he added.

Following the Quebec court of appeal decision on Thursday that Bill 21, the province’s secularism law, is constitutional, affected minority groups are speaking out. In a unanimous decision, the province’s highest court upheld the law that prohibits public sector workers in positions of authority — including teachers, judges, and police officers — from wearing religious symbols on the job. Montreal’s Muslim and Sikh communities feel the decision will only further discrimination in Quebec.

REM passengers were once again left stranded during Wednesday night’s wind and rain storm, some waiting hours on top of the Samuel de Champlain bridge. Others had to be evacuated in Pointe-Saint-Charles to a Costco parking lot. The outages happened just after 7 p.m. after the grid experienced a power surge, causing three trains to suddenly stop.
