May 5—TRAVERSE CITY — Crippled by arthritis and diabetes, 68-year-old Luis Asanza pushed a walker laden with his belongings down the Men's Trail in the Pines on Tuesday morning. His torn Crocs scuffed the dirt as he limped to his new "home" — a used tent, erected next to the trail so that he will be visible if trouble comes calling.

Apr. 30—TRAVERSE CITY — Carrying their worldly possessions on carts, bicycles and their backs, members of the city's homeless community trudged out of Safe Harbor early Tuesday morning, heading for an uncertain future. Rudy Lopez Jr. and several of his friends said they were headed for the Pines, the notorious homeless encampment that sits between Silver Lake Road and 11th Street.

Apr. 21—KALKASKA — Once filled with the cacophony of inmates, corrections officers and clanging cell doors, the Kalkaska County Jail is an eerily quiet place these days. Other than serving as a temporary lockup for a disheveled woman who was asleep on the floor of a holding cell last week, the 62-bed facility, which was built in 1976, sat empty. The woman, who was arrested for malicious destruction of property, was transported to the Wexford County Jail in Cadillac the following day.

Apr. 9—TRAVERSE CITY — Less than four months after hauling several tons of trash out of the Pines, an army of city employees and volunteers descended on the city's largest homeless encampment again on Monday. Fanning out, they swarmed both sides of Kids Creek to reach out-of-the-way campsites that had not been cleaned and had been accumulating trash for years.

Mar. 16—REED CITY — Months after his death, Pete Mimnaugh's family is still wondering why it happened and why it's been handled this way. On Oct. 27, 2023, the 65-year-old Mimnaugh was killed after a Blue Lakes charter bus carrying Traverse City West High School cross country runners struck his Buick Enclave on M-115 in Middle Branch Township. The crash report shows his car had "disabling damage." He was pronounced dead by the time an ambulance transported him to the hospital.

Mar. 8—SUTTONS BAY — A former Glen Lake Community Schools band director waived his right to a preliminary examination on Friday morning. Elijah Daniel George, 26, of Traverse City, pleaded not guilty to three counts of surveilling an unclothed person and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime, according to court records. The charges were prompted by a call to the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office about a teacher "possibly taking inappropriate photos of students" on Jan.

Mar. 3—TRAVERSE CITY — When city officials disclosed in mid-January that they had drafted a memorandum of understanding to explore the feasibility of keeping the Safe Harbor homeless shelter open year-round, it appeared that the MOU would be the beginning of a community discussion. But documents obtained by the Record-Eagle show that city officials, the Northwest Michigan Coalition to End Homelessness and others had already been deeply engaged in under-the-radar statecraft since last fall.

Mar. 1—TRAVERSE CITY — After much public scrutiny and months of pleas to help the homeless, the Safe Harbor board announced Friday that the seasonal shelter will not stay open this summer. In a letter addressed to Traverse City Mayor Amy Shamroe and city and county commissioners, the shelter's board chair, Christopher Ellalasingham, wrote that he wanted to clear up misconceptions that Safe Harbor was a driving force behind the proposal to operate year-round.

Feb. 29—TRAVERSE CITY — A case alleging child abuse against a Kingsley couple will return to 86th District Court for further hearing after an additional charge was presented. Grace Carolyn Quinones, 36, and Robbie Jay Haskins, 45, had their preliminary examinations on Wednesday afternoon following a sheriff's office investigation at their home in Kingsley. Court records show that both were charged with three counts of first-degree child abuse.

Feb. 27—TRAVERSE CITY — Community members gathered by the roadside to pay their respects to U.S. Marine Capt. Miguel Nava as his body was brought back to Michigan Monday afternoon. Nava was killed in the line of duty, one of five U.S. Marines who went missing on Feb. 7 when their CH-53E "Super Stallion" helicopter crashed during a historic storm near San Diego, California. On Monday, his body was flown to Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids.
