His torn Crocs scuffed the dirt as he limped to his new "home" — a used tent, erected next to the trail so that he will be visible if trouble comes calling.

    Apr. 30—TRAVERSE CITY — Carrying their worldly possessions on carts, bicycles and their backs, members of the city's homeless community trudged out of Safe Harbor early Tuesday morning, heading for an uncertain future. Rudy Lopez Jr. and several of his friends said they were headed for the Pines, the notorious homeless encampment that sits between Silver Lake Road and 11th Street.

    Apr. 21—KALKASKA — Once filled with the cacophony of inmates, corrections officers and clanging cell doors, the Kalkaska County Jail is an eerily quiet place these days. Other than serving as a temporary lockup for a disheveled woman who was asleep on the floor of a holding cell last week, the 62-bed facility, which was built in 1976, sat empty. The woman, who was arrested for malicious destruction of property, was transported to the Wexford County Jail in Cadillac the following day.

    Apr. 9—TRAVERSE CITY — Less than four months after hauling several tons of trash out of the Pines, an army of city employees and volunteers descended on the city's largest homeless encampment again on Monday. Fanning out, they swarmed both sides of Kids Creek to reach out-of-the-way campsites that had not been cleaned and had been accumulating trash for years.

    Mar. 16—REED CITY — Months after his death, Pete Mimnaugh's family is still wondering why it happened and why it's been handled this way. On Oct. 27, 2023, the 65-year-old Mimnaugh was killed after a Blue Lakes charter bus carrying Traverse City West High School cross country runners struck his Buick Enclave on M-115 in Middle Branch Township. The crash report shows his car had "disabling damage." He was pronounced dead by the time an ambulance transported him to the hospital.
