I spend a lot of money printing magazines and books each year, and I wanted to figure out how to do it more profitably. Late last year I reached out to several publishers I admired who seemed to do it successfully and asked for their mentorship. On our private calls, however, two admitted that their quarterly magazines did not make money, and in fact were rather expensive to produce.

The picturesque town perched upon mountain caves has played Jerusalem in more than one Jesus film and hosts only 60,000 residents. There have been many attempts to revitalize Italian villages: Selling houses for €1 to attract international development or giving residents €8,000 to start businesses there.

If we should give tax autonomy to US states, maybe we should also create new ones. After all, as we’ve seen, our smaller local governments better represent us than our national ones, and democracy works better in small groups. Maybe that means we should create even smaller ones. A growing separatist movement aims to do just that: Redraw state lines to better represent communities.

What if US states had the same autonomy as EU countries? Theoretically, Vermont could become a social democracy just like Malta—after all, they have the same population size and GDP per capita. California has the same population as Spain and is twice as rich by GDP per capita—they could afford to subsidize childcare, healthcare, and education just like Spain.
