The other day, I noticed Leslie Jordan videos starting to pop up in my Instagram feed. At first, I glanced at them, smiled, and kept scrolling through. I’m afraid my mind wasn’t in the right place to tolerate any happiness. On my very first week on Capitol Hill almost 40 years ago, a friend of a friend worked for Sen. Alan Simpson. When I arrived, I reached out to her, and she invited me to lunch. I walked over to meet her on the Senate side of the Capitol, and to my astonishment, she said, "We're going to have lunch with the senator." I was shocked. It’s been a subject of debate that Donald Trump really dislikes children. And I'm more than certain that the feeling is mutual. You could see the disgust on his face when Elon Musk’s kid was putting his germy hands all over Trump’s desk. I was working on the Hill In 1987, when Congressman Barney Frank courageously came out as gay, becoming one of the first out gay members of Congress. His revelation was met with a mix of support and blatant discrimination. Trust me, I had to hear all the gay jokes about Frank and laugh along with everyone else because I couldn’t dare voice words of support for him that would have suggested that I was gay too.
