This is a week, in many faith traditions, devoted to suffering. To the long shadows before redemption. To pain before resurrection. Keep up with the latest in LGBTQ+ news and politics. Sign up for The Advocate's email newsletter. I think if you’re going to write about suffering, you should know a little something about it. As I’ve written previously, 10 years ago this year, I fell into a deep, severe depression that landed me on disability for a year.

I run hot and cold with Bill Maher. Personally, I prefer John Oliver or Stephen Colbert. Yes, Maher has his moments reveling in provocation, and sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. I remember when he tangled with National Review Editor Rich Lowry about January 6 last fall before the election and the fact that Lowry was voting for Donald Trump.

I have a thing about remembering dates, so when I see a certain date on the calendar, or one approaching, I can usually attach to it a memory or some historical significance. April 12 is one of those dates because that’s the day President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died at age 63 in Warm Springs, Georgia. That was 80 years ago today.
