As the dust of World War Two settled, several ‘people’s cars’ emerged: the Volkswagen Beetle, Mini, Citroën 2CV and Fiat 500. The 500, or ‘Cinquecento’, was released in 1957 to succeed the ageing Topolino (‘little mouse’ in English). Its predecessor was built under the spectre of 1930s fascism, just like its German Beetle counterpart. It’s certainly ironic that fascist dictatorships were the backdrop for the development of liberating cars with cutesy bodystyles.

There’s been plenty of buzz about the all-electric Alpine A290 ever since it made its dynamic debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. There, the A290’s retro, rally-inspired aesthetics gained widespread admiration, building on the handsome silhouette of the Renault 5 with more muscular bodywork and distinctive faux rally spotlights. While the A290’s ascent up Goodwood’s Hill was silent, anticipation for the car has been anything but. Perhaps for good reason.

Le Mans Classic organiser Peter Auto has announced that the renowned 24-hour Historic endurance event will no longer be held biennially, but will now take place every year. Going forward, the event will alternate between two distinct formats: Le Mans Classic Heritage and Le Mans Classic Legend. The former will celebrate the golden age of endurance racing, while the latter will focus on more contemporary Historic competition cars.
