A new bus gate in a city centre has started operating with drivers warned to obey the changed layout. Buses now have priority in both directions on Corporation Street between Marsh Lane and Heatley Streetin Preston near the university campus. Lancashire County Council said it hoped the move will "increase the reliability of public transport" in the city. Buses, Hackney taxis and cycle users will be allowed to go through the bus gate, but private-hire taxis will not.

Action needs to be taken against unlicensed taxis in a seaside town, an MP has said. Chris Webb, the new Blackpool South MP elected in the recent by-election, has taken aim at companies whose taxis operate without a licence. Mr Webb said there had been a "massive increase in unlicensed and uninsured taxi drivers picking up jobs here". The government said it had published updated guidance on the issue for licensing authorities in England.

Just one home for social rent has been built in a seaside town in the last decade, housing charity Shelter claimed. Nearly 1,000 social homes in Blackpool were sold or demolished between 2013 and 2023, with 923 homes removed from social rent, according to its research. Shelter said thousands remained on the waiting list for social housing. The town's council said it had built more than 700 new homes "for affordable rent" in the last ten years.
