Western Kentucky’s Ellis Park, located in Henderson, has had a resurgence in recent years. The small, rustic track located on the north banks of the Ohio River (on the Indiana side, yet still in Kentucky) has seen field size and purse levels rise after the introduction of historical horse racing machines to the facility as a new, year-round source of gaming revenue in 2012. In fall 2022, Ellis Park was bought by Churchill Downs Inc.

When Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen remarked after this game that Munster had been “able to prevent us from playing”, it was said with grudging respect more than churlishness. Few could argue that the defending champions were not deserving winners at Ellis Park even if the 33-13 scoreline did not fully indicate how competitive the home side were.
