When renowned Elmira artist Julian Raven purchased a long abandoned and deteriorating building in the city in 2014, with plans to restore it and use it as a studio, he never suspected he would end up in a protracted battle with state officials over previous contamination. But the state Department of Environmental Conservation designated the property at 714 Baldwin St. as an inactive hazardous waste site that represents a significant threat to public health or the environment.

An Ithaca man who admitted to his role in a 2024 incident in the Town of Big Flats that left a Chemung County sheriff's investigator critically injured will spend a dozen years in prison. Dominick Haley, 25, pleaded guilty March 3 to felony charges of assault on a police officer and second-degree assault, along with a misdemeanor count of petit larceny.

A Bradford County man convicted late last year on child sex abuse charges faces up to seven years in state prison. A Bradford County Court jury convicted Matthew Chapman, 43, of Ridgebury Township, Dec. 3 on charges of indecent assault and corruption of minors following a two-day trial. Chapman was sentenced this week to 15 months to seven years in prison for his conviction. As part of the sentence, Chapman will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

A Chemung County man has been charged with rape after an investigation into allegations made by a juvenile. The Chemung County Sheriff's Office charged Warren F. Morrison, 49, of the Town of Ashland, with first-degree rape and said additional charges are expected.
