As tanks rolled into the former Yugoslavia and the bombs continued to explode over London, the world watched as World War II took hold of Europe. With Nazi Germany gaining ground and steamrolling across a continent, Richmond residents answered the call to action by planting community gardens, buying war bonds and, for some, giving their lives. While the war raged on, Richmond’s own Times-Dispatch told of its horrors, chronicling its devastating effects nearly every day.

The history of Richmond’s “Green Jewel of the James River” is as old and assorted as the city itself. Mayo Island is a relatively small tract of land that rests in the middle of the river. For generations, it served as the connection point between North and South Richmond. For much of its history, the island remained privately owned but served as a public gathering place.

The Hanover School Board has canceled a special meeting scheduled for Monday night, which would have seen the board provide an update on its superintendent search. School Board Chair Bob May announced at the board’s March 11 regular meeting that the board had recently narrowed its candidate pool down from 35 to four — all of whom were among the seven recommended by Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, the consulting firm hired by the board to help conduct the search.
