The members of the genus Alphavirus, of the family Togaviridae, are a group of small, enveloped, arthropod-borne viruses whose natural cycle of transmission is maintained between vertebrate, reservoir hosts and invertebrate, arthropod vectors (1–4). Alphaviral infection in arthropods is largely asymptomatic resulting in the persistent infection of host cells with negligible effects on their biological functions (5).

Garden dormice found dead were collected from almost the complete known range of the species in Germany as part of a German-wide project called “In Search of the Garden Dormouse” [47]. Coordinated by employees of the non-governmental organization “Friends of the Earth Germany”, mainly citizen scientist volunteers sampled garden dormouse carcasses found dead in gardens, on public property, in traps, in nest boxes or brought home by cats.

While vaccination is the most effective way to prevent influenza infection and adverse outcomes, and despite WHO recommendations to vaccinate pregnant persons, access to seasonal influenza vaccines remains low. We explored knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant persons about seasonal influenza vaccines to inform actions to improve vaccine uptake among this priority population.

MethodsAll reagents were purchased from Thermo Fisher unless stated otherwise. For a visual overview of the study design, refer to Fig. 1A. Based on procedures described in detail previously [49, 50], 1500 adult female An. stephensi housed in a 32.5-cm3 cage were infected with P. berghei-infected mice [0 days post-infection (dpi herein)]. At day 1 post-infection, ~ 350 mosquitoes were transferred to each of 4 cages (24.5 cm3) for the respective treatments.
