Buried in the prologue of Jordan Peele’s (2019) psychological horror film Us is a commercial for the 1986 fundraiser ‘Hands Across America’. Its conceit was to create a chain of people stretching “from sea to shining sea” across the continental United States to raise money for the hungry. The attempt failed, though it is sometimes claimed that a sufficient number of people participated to succeed, had they formed only one direct line.
