Homer High School girls track and field team received the state championship award last week and the boys came in fifth place. Many school records were broken at the meet and it’s the first time since 2016 for the team to receive a championship award. Homer coach Bob Ostrom said the team roster had 60 students on it and 35 qualified to compete at the state meet.

Homer's Kristen Faulkner last week participated in a community question-and-answer session and was recognized for her achievements as a 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal cyclist. At the Friday Dec. 27 event, hosted by Jim Anderson in the Homer High School Mariner Theatre, Faulkner was given a city Award of Excellence from former Mayor Ken Castner and a draft state legislative citation from local Rep. Sarah Vance, who presented the award in person.

Homer journalist and writer Tom Kizzia on Tuesday, Dec. 17 was presented with a state legislative citation award by Rep. Andrew Gray. The award honors Kizzia's contributions to Alaska literature through both published non-fiction books and Alaska public media. Gray, an Anchorage Democrat, was the primary sponsor for the award. The award was co-sponsored by Fairbanks Republican Sen. Click Bishop, who represents Fairbanks . Homer Rep.

South Peninsula Hospital will sponsor several new community health and wellness programs starting in January. They will be hosting free open walks every Monday at SPARC starting on Monday, Jan. 6 for all community members. Walks are scheduled to take place from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The walk program will take place through May. SPARC is located at 600 Sterling Highway, next to the Homer Middle School in Homer.
