Pier One Theatre Youth Camp Production of Treasure Island Opens This Weekend

Homer’s Pier One Theatre has been providing youth theatre camps and productions for several decades, with many youth attendees as second- or third-generation participants. Summer 2025 offers several opportunities for youth of all ages, and the most recent session about to finish up is “Production and Theatre Skills,” with the students performing Treasure Island on the Homer Spit stage this weekend.

In March of 2023, the Homer Fish and Game Advisory Committee submitted a proposal to the Alaska Board of Game to conduct a feasibility study for transporting Sitka Blacktail deer to Unit 15C on the south side of Kachemak Bay. The proposal states that the issue this intends to address is to “increase opportunity for hunting, food security, local economy and wildlife viewing in Unit 15C.
Homer High School girls' track and field team receives first place in state

Homer High School girls track and field team received the state championship award last week and the boys came in fifth place. Many school records were broken at the meet and it’s the first time since 2016 for the team to receive a championship award. Homer coach Bob Ostrom said the team roster had 60 students on it and 35 qualified to compete at the state meet.

Homer's Kristen Faulkner last week participated in a community question-and-answer session and was recognized for her achievements as a 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal cyclist. At the Friday Dec. 27 event, hosted by Jim Anderson in the Homer High School Mariner Theatre, Faulkner was given a city Award of Excellence from former Mayor Ken Castner and a draft state legislative citation from local Rep. Sarah Vance, who presented the award in person.
Writer receives award for contributions to Alaska history

Homer journalist and writer Tom Kizzia on Tuesday, Dec. 17 was presented with a state legislative citation award by Rep. Andrew Gray. The award honors Kizzia's contributions to Alaska literature through both published non-fiction books and Alaska public media. Gray, an Anchorage Democrat, was the primary sponsor for the award. The award was co-sponsored by Fairbanks Republican Sen. Click Bishop, who represents Fairbanks . Homer Rep.
SPH welcomes January with health and wellness programs

South Peninsula Hospital will sponsor several new community health and wellness programs starting in January. They will be hosting free open walks every Monday at SPARC starting on Monday, Jan. 6 for all community members. Walks are scheduled to take place from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The walk program will take place through May. SPARC is located at 600 Sterling Highway, next to the Homer Middle School in Homer.
Homer hosts annual Mariner alumni game

The Homer High School basketball teams on Saturday hosted the annual alumni game for varsity boys and girls teams. Visiting alumni, mostly from the 2000 graduating years, returned to the Mariner gym to play the current teams. Fifteen men and 16 women returned. The men's game held four close quarters. Alumni won with 60 points to Mariner varsity's 49. Mariner women beat their alumni with a close game of 42 to 41.
Homer landslide susceptibility mapping project completed

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys completed a comprehensive landslide hazard assessment for the city, the division reported in a Dec. 11 press release. The hazard assessment created a map and database of historical and prehistoric slope failures, maps of shallow and deep-seated landslide susceptibility, and a map of simulated debris flow runouts for the City of Homer and neighboring Kachemak. Homer's Little Fireweed Academy students on Friday, Dec. 20, delivered three wagons of donations to the Homer Food Pantry, including dry goods, canned goods and paper towels. Food Pantry coordinator Deb Schmitz, a retired kindergarten and first grade teacher from Little Fireweed, introduced the organization to the students and thanked them for their donation. Schmitz told the students the pantry provides food to approximately 170 families each week and asked them to guess how many cans that is.
