Homer’s Pier One Theatre has been providing youth theatre camps and productions for several decades, with many youth attendees as second- or third-generation participants. Summer 2025 offers several opportunities for youth of all ages, and the most recent session about to finish up is “Production and Theatre Skills,” with the students performing Treasure Island on the Homer Spit stage this weekend.

In March of 2023, the Homer Fish and Game Advisory Committee submitted a proposal to the Alaska Board of Game to conduct a feasibility study for transporting Sitka Blacktail deer to Unit 15C on the south side of Kachemak Bay. The proposal states that the issue this intends to address is to “increase opportunity for hunting, food security, local economy and wildlife viewing in Unit 15C.

Homer High School girls track and field team received the state championship award last week and the boys came in fifth place. Many school records were broken at the meet and it’s the first time since 2016 for the team to receive a championship award. Homer coach Bob Ostrom said the team roster had 60 students on it and 35 qualified to compete at the state meet.

Homer's Kristen Faulkner last week participated in a community question-and-answer session and was recognized for her achievements as a 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal cyclist. At the Friday Dec. 27 event, hosted by Jim Anderson in the Homer High School Mariner Theatre, Faulkner was given a city Award of Excellence from former Mayor Ken Castner and a draft state legislative citation from local Rep. Sarah Vance, who presented the award in person.
