NEW YORK (AP) — Ryan Miller, lead singer of alternative rock band Guster, has a new gig that even he's a little surprised about: Musical theater songwriter. He laughs that he's gone all Broadway. “I just went full-into the ballpit — just, like, face-first, take-me-wherever-this-is-going,” he said before a recent rehearsal of his bright new musical “Safety Not Guaranteed” at Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Summer tends to be the quiet season for theater in New York, and this year it’s especially quiet on Broadway. (As well as at the Delacorte, which is under renovation, Shakespeare in the Park is mostly off.) In the aftermath of a choked-to-the-gills spring of Tony Award-targeted openings — and a few sudden closings — only three productions have announced summer plans so far, and a lot of August programming is still unclear.
