Sgt. John Rice VFW Post 6316 in Blaine honors an Indigenous man who made the ultimate sacrifice. “Helped start the Civil Rights movement,” Post Commander Corky Olson said. “It brought attention to Indian affairs and how they’re being treated.”Sgt. Rice was born in Nebraska and lived in Iowa. While fighting in World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. Fighting in the Korean War, Sgt Rice was killed in action. After his body was brought to Sioux City, Iowa, the funeral was stopped.
Charges: Man stabbed his wife 10 times, dragged her through home

A Farmington man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing his wife several times and dragging her through a home in front of a witness. Mehdi Badaoui, 52, was charged Thursday with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder. Dakota County officials say Farmington police were called to a home on April 15 on a report of a domestic assault.
Stearns County sheriff launches “Take Me Home” program to protect community

A Shoreview woman is safe after she was rescued from a burning home. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office says a triplex went up in flames in the 3500 block of Chatsworth Circle around 8 p.m. Wednesday. One of the men who helped in the rescue tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he was grateful that everyone is okay. “Yeah, we were definitely concerned,” said Mariela Martin, who lives nearby.
St. Paul nonprofit addressing homelessness with new 'hub' for families

A St. Paul nonprofit is expanding their reach to combat homelessness by acquiring a permanent hub with more housing and wraparound services in Bandana Square. Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul currently houses 40 families, but the new space could accommodate over 100 families. “Everybody deserves a chance,” Kathy Jo Campbell, who experienced homelessness, said.
40 years in jail for man convicted in fatal St. Cloud shooting

A man in his 20s will serve four decades in prison for a shooting that killed a man and injured two others. Deionte Jaewon Parker, 27, was sentenced to 40 years (480 months) in prison for aiding and abetting second-degree murder and possessing a gun illegally. A jury found Parker guilty on March 4, according to court records.
Walz won’t back down from 'back to the office' order

Brooklyn Center police say a 2- to 3-year-old boy wearing a maroon jacket, grey pants and brown boots was found walking in front of Brooklyn Center Secondary High School around 1 p.m.If you have any information regarding the child, please call 911 and ask to speak with a Brooklyn Center police officer.

There have been many reports of long lines and wait times at license and service centers around the metro, a lot of it due to the rush to meet the Minnesota Real ID deadline on May 7th. At one location in Woodbury, the wait time exceeded four hours last week.
