Sgt. John Rice VFW Post 6316 in Blaine honors an Indigenous man who made the ultimate sacrifice. “Helped start the Civil Rights movement,” Post Commander Corky Olson said. “It brought attention to Indian affairs and how they’re being treated.”Sgt. Rice was born in Nebraska and lived in Iowa. While fighting in World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. Fighting in the Korean War, Sgt Rice was killed in action. After his body was brought to Sioux City, Iowa, the funeral was stopped.

A Farmington man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing his wife several times and dragging her through a home in front of a witness. Mehdi Badaoui, 52, was charged Thursday with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder. Dakota County officials say Farmington police were called to a home on April 15 on a report of a domestic assault.

The 2025 Minnesota Legislature got off to a slow start with a nearly month-long boycott by DFL House members in a power-sharing dispute with Republicans. That slow start will have to result in a rapid-fire finish if lawmakers are going to finish work on the budget by the May 19 deadline. So far, they’ve only passed four bills in three months.

A Shoreview woman is safe after she was rescued from a burning home. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office says a triplex went up in flames in the 3500 block of Chatsworth Circle around 8 p.m. Wednesday. One of the men who helped in the rescue tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he was grateful that everyone is okay. “Yeah, we were definitely concerned,” said Mariela Martin, who lives nearby.
