Wednesday, January 29 was the start of the lunar new year, the cultural and, for some, religious, holiday celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, and of course China, among others. The fifteen-day festival is filled with traditions, and in the Chinese zodiac, 2025 is the year of the snake.

Grey Skies Blue, a 2016 dancetheater piece by Minneapolis-based group SHAPESHIFT Dance, does not neatly fit into a box. It’s a series of vignettes with a loose story about a group of friends, who seemed to be in their late teens or early twenties, but hardly a story ballet. It’s mostly dance but with some dialogue. It’s largely breakdance and hip hop choreography but also includes moments of classical partnering.

The third and final week of the 20th annual Fuego Flamenco Festival at GALA Hispanic Theatre featured musicians Marc López and Ana Brenes and dancer Montserrat Martínez in an evening of traditional and new flamenco works. Titled Intimate Friends of Flamenco and conceived by López, the performance was a cohesive, balanced showcase for Brenes’ powerful voice and his outstanding original compositions, but it dragged at times.

The 20th annual Fuego Flamenco Festival produced by GALA Hispanic Theatre opened week two with a thunderclap with Edwin Aparicio’s Lo Mejor de Edwin, a spellbinding evening of flamenco works choreographed over the past 14 years and featuring dance and musical collaborators from both sides of the Atlantic.

DC audiences were lucky this week to see Korean contemporary dance company, Laboratory Dance Project (LDP), for a rare U.S. appearance. Founded in 2001, this company of stunning dancers brought a unique blend of intensity and blase cool to their work. While neither piece of choreography made full use of the dancers’ prowess, Thursday’s opening night performance was nonetheless a captivating and welcome distraction. LDP performed two works from 2022 by choreographer Dongkyu Kim, MOB and Ash.

Yes, orchestras may downsize from 30 violins to 25, but it still takes all 25 roughly forty minutes to play Beethoven’s sixth symphony.

Saturday, September 21, 2024 marks the 15th year of National Dance Day, a celebration of artistic expression and the joy of movement. The Kennedy Center is continuing its longtime support for this day with an all-day schedule of free classes, community conversations and performances beginning at 10am. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, a champion of National Dance Day who, in partnership with American Dance Movement, helped to found the day back in 2010, will be onsite in the afternoon.
