STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) - For the past twelve years, the United Way of Portage County has been spearheading efforts to ensure that parents who need diapers receive them. Soon, the organization will be driving distribution in the county as an official diaper bank. Last year, more than 75,000 diapers were dispensed through the United Way, but CEO Fred Hebblewhite said that addresses only a small portion of the need.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - Across the country, half of families are struggling to pay for enough diapers for their young children. Of those families, The Babies’ Place in Wausau is seeing about a third of the diaper need going toward children ages 3 and older. “That’s about the age that we want to be seeing them transitioning to using the toilet,” Elizabeth Robinson, the community engagement manager at The Neighbors’ Place, said.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - There are many reasons why about half of families with young children struggle to pay for enough diapers. Those other factors can even get in the way of accessing the help when its available. “When you pay for rent and utilities and hopefully you have enough money for food and diapers,” explained Allie Acridge. She’s a volunteer engagement specialist at the Women’s Community. She sees firsthand the barriers some mothers face.
