On Election Day, Berkeley voting centers saw long lines that poured out of the doors and around the blocks of both the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland building and Eshleman Hall. Despite the high student voter turnout, there are only seven poll workers working at each of these voting centers, both of which are either on or extremely close to campus. “We have been planning this since late August,” said Ariyana Tavakoli, program manager of YWCA Berkeley/Oakland.

Nox, the feisty fan-favorite peregrine falcon who was born atop UC Berkeley’s Campanile in April, died overnight on Oct. 23. As the smallest of his siblings, Nox recently recovered from a wing fracture and was released into the wild for four days before suffering complications and dying two days later. After his release into the wild, Nox was rescued from the ground in the side yard of a house in Richmond on Oct. 21.

On Friday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom awarded the city of Berkeley more than $5.3 million to alleviate houselessness by addressing unhoused encampments and creating new housing. Berkeley is one of 18 local governments to receive funding from a state grant of $130.7 million, which Newsom is distributing from the state’s $1 billion Encampment Resolution Funds.
