Patients with SLE are at risk of adverse drug events (ADEs), polypharmacy and medication non-adherence. In this cohort, 40% of SLE hospitalisations were medication related: 29% were associated with one or more ADEs and 10% were flares associated with non-adherence. Half of ADEs were preventable or ameliorable. This study highlights a high burden of medication-related harm in SLE and identifies subgroups who could benefit from preventative interventions.
