DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - The president of the Iowa Farmer’s Union said proposed changes to the National Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP will hurt Iowa Farmers. The cuts total around $230 billion as part of President Trump’s so-called ‘big beautiful bill.’ Aaron Lehman said farmers are an integral part of SNAP because they’re growing the food people on the program are buying. Lehman said right now farmers are experiencing low commodity prices and a very concentrated atmosphere.

SWISHER, Iowa (KCRG) - Since the start of the year, Shawn Rife, owner of Kava House and Cafe said a cocoa shortage has had a big impact on her local business. ”We’re probably on our 4th brand. We no longer can get dark cocoa at all. We had to switch to regular cocoa and the prices of that have went up about 34%,” said Rife. With 12 to 16 desserts on the menu, Rife said constant change in supply has forced them to modify desserts and even take some out of rotation.

The order, signed last month, requires truck drivers to read and speak English proficiently. While federal law mandates that commercial drivers speak English, the White House said it hasn’t been enforced since the Obama administration.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - A University of Iowa alumnus has been reunited with the lost class ring he wore with pride for decades after a curious grocery store manager tracked him down. Wayne Shaw went to the University of Iowa from 1964 to 1968 before joining the U.S. Army, KCRG reports. “Graduated in ’68. I was in the two-year ROTC program, so I was commissioned in the Army on the same day as the graduation. I was in business finance and insurance,” Shaw said.
