Jury convicts serial bank robber

A serial bank robber seen smiling with a stash of cash in a selfie taken seven minutes after his last heist was convicted of multiple charges in a federal court Friday. A jury found Karim Brown, 32, of Fayetteville, guilty on one charge of bank robbery, three counts of armed bank robbery and three charges of brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. Brown will be sentenced on a later date.

Law enforcement agencies continue to search for an escaped minimum-custody inmate who left the custody of the Hyde Correctional Center in Swan Quarter on Thursday. Francisco Cardenas, 32, has ties to the Sanford area and residents are advised to be on the lookout. Cardenas is identified as a Native American male standing 6-feet-1-inch tall and weighing about 130 pounds with brown eyes and a tattoo of a star on his left hand, according to a release from the N.C. Department of Adult Correction.
