Darren Thornton’s Four Mothers, a remake of the Italian film Mid-August Lunch, is a very easy film to fall in love with. With a charming script, an excellent ensemble cast, and a whole lot of heart, the comedy covers everything from aging to loneliness to Pride to caregiving to trauma and family relationships, and does it all without tipping into full-blown schmaltz or resorting to emotional manipulation.

Every once in a while, a film comes along that feels like a complete breath of fresh air. Irish-language thriller Aontas is one of those films. Though there are elements here that we’ve seen before, there’s something about the way director-writer Damian McCann and co-writer Sarah Gordon fit the puzzle pieces together that makes it feel completely original. Told in reverse chronology, the story begins at its end–with the aftermath of the heist gone horribly wrong. Or so it seems.

Rarely have we been more in need of comic relief and distraction than the times we’re currently living in. So it’s not hyperbole to say that Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz’s new sports comedy, Racewalkers, is exactly what the doctor ordered. In the spirit of Cool Runnings (and even Men With Brooms), the Toronto-based triple-threat directing-acting-writing duo have taken a lesser-watched sport and tailored a truly hilarious story to its oddities.

My favourite film of 2024 is finally coming to theatres this Friday, courtesy of @MongrelMedia . Marianne Jean-Baptiste is stunning in Mike Leigh's #HardTruths, as is the entire supporting cast. See it if you can (and check out my review for @ThatShelf ⬇️)

Mike Leigh's #HardTruths is a stunning, compassionate portrait of humanity likely to be counted among his very best. Marianne Jean-Baptiste's performance is unforgettable. https://t.co/tPlCO6FBBu @MongrelMedia
