As an artist and curator of Jamaican heritage who lives on the Yorkshire East coast, it was an absolute delight and a buzz to see the Diasporas Now programme detonating here in Hull at Humber Street Gallery. Born out of lockdown, Diasporas Now was founded in 2021 by Rieko Whitfield (Japan/USA), Paola Estrella (Mexico) and Lulu Wang (China) whilst they were all at the Royal College of Art.

I’ve sought out Uma Breakdown’s solo exhibition EARTH A.D. 2 at FACT Liverpool as a refuge three times now. The first, I escaped to FACT’s upstairs darkened exhibition space amid a busy day. The second, I walked numbly through the installation after a challenging phone call; I found myself staring at a family of chrome hieroglyphics, attempting to make sense of them as they wriggled away from the wall. Last time, I entered for the quiet after the sensory overload of the street.

Queer writer and philosopher Simon(e) van Saarloos speaks of rules as ‘physical, integrated knowledge; you follow the rules without questioning them’.1 This, they say, results in scenarios, relationships and games that lose their playful character where ‘nothing new is created any longer’. These ideas were playing on my mind whilst I explored Luke Beech’s first solo exhibition Winner Breaks First at Humber Street Gallery in Hull.
