WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – A Walmart employee in southeastern North Carolina was shot and killed after confronting a man accused of shoplifting from the store Saturday evening. According to officials with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, several employees tried to stop 35-year-old Dean Michael Newman from shoplifting when a fight started. Newman pulled out a gun and fired one shot that hit employee Mark Thomas Paz.

Tens of thousands of longshoremen went on strike at midnight Tuesday, shutting down major ports along the East and Gulf coasts and choking off deliveries. The state port in Wilmington is just one of many ports where a lockdown is starting. Dockworkers from Maine to Texas already began walking picket lines Tuesday morning. Consumers aren’t likely to feel the pinch unless the walkout lasts for multiple weeks, experts said.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Kent Berry’s life was forever changed after a motorcycle accident in March. He was hit by a car at the intersection of South College Rd. and Shipyard Blvd. He says without several people coming to his rescue, he wouldn’t be alive. Berry talked to WECT from his hospital bed after the crash happened. Now, things are looking much different for Berry. He is now taking life one day and one step at a time, a big achievement after he lost his leg.
